Demon Angel The Guardians Book 1 Meljean Brook Books
I've read the Victorian steampunk series by Meljean Brook and thought they were awesome. However, I had trouble getting through this book. The storyline looked interesting, but it was flat. It could've been shorter to keep things a little more interesting.Tags : Amazon.com: Demon Angel (The Guardians, Book 1) (9780425213476): Meljean Brook: Books,Meljean Brook,Demon Angel (The Guardians, Book 1),Berkley Sensation,0425213471,Romance - Fantasy,Love stories,San Francisco (Calif.),Supernatural,AMERICAN LIGHT ROMANTIC FICTION,FICTION Fantasy Romantic,FICTION Romance Fantasy,FICTION Romance Paranormal General,Fiction,Fiction - Romance,Fiction-Romance,General Adult,MASS MARKET,Novels, other prose & writers,Romance,RomanceGothic,Romance: Gothic,Romance: historical,SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY,United States, romance;paranormal romance;romance novels;fantasy romance;romance books;ghost;science fiction and fantasy;fiction;novels;fiction books;books fiction;fantasy novels;romance novel;fantasy books for adults;fantasy book;fantasy fiction;fantasy novel;romance book;romantic novels;paranormal;fantasy;urban fantasy;vampires;witches;demons;magic;supernatural;dragons;angels;werewolves;vampire;anthology;contemporary romance;time travel;science fiction;ghosts;mystery;alpha male;mythology;historical romance, romance; paranormal romance; demons; angels; vampires; urban fantasy; fantasy romance; witches; magic; vampire; supernatural; mythology; shifters; suspense; werewolf; contemporary romance; werewolves; romantic suspense; action; ghosts; romantic; historical romance; historical; romance novels; fiction; fiction books; romance books; fantasy books for adults; science fiction and fantasy; science fiction and fantasy books; time travel; anthology; sci-fi; mermaids; mystery; shapeshifters; alpha male; novella; love; adventure; demon; witch,Romance: historical
Demon Angel The Guardians Book 1 Meljean Brook Books Reviews
I have a kindle and read all the books in this series except for Demon Angel, which is not on kindle. I love this series. I found it clever, sexy and intelligent. Except for the author's annoying habit of over using names in conversation, I felt they were very well written. So I decided I would buy the paperback of Demon Angel and read how they all began. I was bitterly disappointed. While reading I got the sense that I was plodding around in a thick fog, going nowhere. The behavior of both Lillith and Hugh made little sense and I am currently at page 188 and realize I am receiving no pleasure reading this book, and so I have given up. If you have not begun this series, I strongly recommend you skip this book and begin with Demon Moon. Ms. Brooks explains enough in future books that you won't miss out on anything having missed Demon Angel. I'm hoping the reason this book is not available on kindle is because the author has plans to rewrite it into something worthy of the other excellent books in this series.
From the first page you're d o n e...hook-line-sinker. This has been a wonderfully seemingly never to end book... and I have loved and adored it! Lillith and Hugh have a two thousand year old itch to scratch and let me tell you that your book with literally ignite before it's over with! This one is hot stuff ladies...Wow! I read "Demon Night" from this series out of order and that's the one that got me hooked. Goodreads has this listed as Book #4 in the series... has it listed as Book #2. So my question is, where in the heck is Book #1? This one reads like a first book in a series (there are no "couples" before this book and there's no filler information from a previous book...hmmm...
I'll lay a little groundwork but try not to spoil anything. The series premise is based upon the biblical tale of Lucifer's fall. Evidently, you have three "pure-breds" - angels, demons, and nosferatu. The angels stayed true to God, the demons sided with the Morningstar/Lucifer, and the nosferatu wouldn't choose sides but hid until the war was over, and so were cursed. From these, you have many other varieties of things that go bump in the night. One of the problems with angels trying to protect humans was that they weren't human enough - mankind looked on them almost as gods. So, a corps of Guardians was formed.
The book starts out in like 1217 or something, with Hugh and Lilith. Another reviewer griped that the author spent the first half of the book writing a prologue, but honestly, I don't see it that way. Yeah, it is a prologue, but IMO it made the book better by being so detailed. You get to see the history between Hugh and Lilith, and you also get to see 800 years of sexual tension. But, like any good film, Ms. Brook moves quickly through the "set-up" stage and onto the "main" story. I just don't think the book would have been as powerful had she done it any other way. I remember thinking the other night "Man, when these guys finally give in and admit how they feel, it's going to be explosive." I was right.
Anyway, I'll just wrap up by saying that they have one itty-bitty problem. Hugh's a guardian. And Lilith? Let's just say that she calls Lucifer "Daddy" ;-)
This book starts out with some great promise, and even has some brilliant ideas(the guardian concept is a great one), but it completely fails to capitalize on them, instead focusing on the dreary interactions between two characters that stop being interesting after the first chapter.
When it finally does get to the portion that is supposed to be interesting, in modern times, it also fails to create a plot that is at all interesting.
Spoilers
Okay, so these half fallen supervampires are becoming immune to sunlight. According to the author, we're really supposed to care about this, but when the half demon girl takes two down with nothing more than a pistol and good luck, their dramatic impact suddenly fails to register.
On top of that, the romantic element is definitely sub-par. I had great hopes when I bought this book, but I am now sadly disappointed.
I strongly recommend this series to fans of paranormal romance. Meljean Brook sets up a complex, fascinating world, and I love her main characters, especially Lilith- it is unusual to see an anti-heroine, anti-heroes are more common. This first book is hard to understand in many places, but the writing becomes much more clear by book 3 in the series, and the series is worth the investment.
Another option is to jump into the series from Book 3, which is much clearer.
The top reviews already have much more information, go read those )
This is one of the few authors that makes me cry while reading a book. Whatever it is about Meljean Brook that makes her write this series, I hope her inspiration does not dry out for a long time yet. The construction of the world and its characters is woven out of emotional fabric and of course the artifice of non-human to represent archetypes is blown by the complexity of the souls whose stories she melds together. The majority of the books in the *Demon* series are, even stripped of sexual content (which she does wonderfully), a voyage into love and all its flavours. It is rare to find an author who delves into the paranormal without making it seem ridiculous and overdone. Quite the opposite, these books make you wonder why she did not write at least 100 pages more per volume. The story is there, the plot is there the depth is there. If you have never picked up one of her novels before, start with this one. You fall in love with both protagonists, as well as the mind of the author herself.
