This is something of a unicorn in contemporary romance. An actual story without gratuitous sex every other chapter. It's has character and relationship development. It's sad that this is my reaction and that my expectations have been brought so low but it's a nice change to read about love instead of lust. An it's got my favorite trope normal girl and famous guy and I actually felt like the fly on the very well detailed wall of their believable romance. Breath of friggin fresh air this story.Tags : Hooked: A Novel - Kindle edition by Brenda Rothert. Download it once and read it on your Kindle device, PC, phones or tablets. Hooked A Novel edition by Brenda Rothert Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This was another great read by Brenda Rothert. Miranda Carr and Jake Birch are from completely different worlds. Miranda works 2 jobs and putting herself through college. Jake is a professional hockey player who is a big time player. One of her jobs is as a hotel maid at the Dupont and Jake is staying there for the next 6 weeks while his apartment is being remodeled
Miranda's 25 years old and she's only able to afford 2 classes right now. She and her sister live together in a tiny apartment and they both work really hard. She's taking a break from guys right now because she's dated cheaters and people that haven't treated her that great. When she meets Jake, he comes across as a player and a jerk. But there is something about Jake that draws her in. She thought he just wanted in her pants but he takes her on dates and doesn't try to sleep with her.
Jake works hard as a professional NHL hockey player. He wants things to be certain ways especially on game days. He doesn't have time or interest in a long term relationship. He has something from his past that he hasn't gotten over and anytime anything family wise comes up, he gets extremely angry. He hooked up one night at a party with a girl and comes to find out that she's the owner's daughter and he has to date her or he will be benched or traded. He's talented, he's the team captain, and he does his job well. Miranda is different from most women he's experienced or knows.
Definitely worth reading.
Hooked is a sexy and funny romantic read! I devoured this book and didn't want it to end. I loved that the story is told from both main characters points of views. It really helped heighten the emotions and make Jake and Miranda more relatable. There are swoons and sexy times (ahem, parking garage!), but also laughs and just the right amount of drama and angst.
Jake and Miranda are great individually, but together they're amazing! I loved how independent and driven Miranda was. She didn't let her go of her own goals and stayed true to herself throughout the entire book. I was glad that she spoke her mind and challenged Jake by always calling him out on his behavior. Her refusal to let Jake just come to her financial rescue only made me respect her more and heightened the connection between our characters. Yes, there was great chemistry and a physical attraction between Jake and Miranda, but their friendship and relationship progressed naturally and didn't feel rushed. I liked that they each struggled to battle their demons and relationship fears. On the outside they live very different lives, but as you peel the layers back, you see how they actually really complement each other.
Jake initially comes across as an arrogant jerk, but as the story progresses, you see that it's really a mask and that he has put up a wall around his heart. You realize just how vulnerable and sweet he is and this ups the swoons exponentially. Yes, he makes mistakes, but he owns up to them and resolves things maturely with Miranda, showing how true and deep his feelings run. All of his hockey rituals and superstitions were fun to read about too, though wearing the same game socks repeatedly during a streak sounds pretty terrible!
The epilogue was perfect and I loved getting that glimpse of the future. I would love to read more about Jake and Miranda, or her sister Paige, who provided some great comic relief (ahem, getting woken up by books falling onto your head!) If you're looking for a funny and sexy read that's high on swoons and low on drama, you don't want to miss Hooked!
Brenda Rothert knows how to write sports romance and her hockey series are some of my favorite of all time. This one however did not have the spark that her others have had. Miranda and Jake are fun characters with good chemistry that will certainly hold your attention but there did seem to be something missing from this one that set it apart from her other wonderful books. First I was really hoping for more from the whole "being forced to date the owners daughter" situation. I almost felt like that just got wrapped up a bit too quickly and would have liked to see that go further. I think my biggest complaint with this book would have to be the amount of time the author took to have Miranda and Jake finally get together. There were so many "almost" moments that I started to get annoyed. Don't get me wrong I don't like when characters are thrown instantly into bed with one another either but this was so drawn out I started to lose in interest. Overall the book was entertaining and fun but was missing a bit of the "it" factor that so many of her other books have.
**I was given a free advanced copy of this book by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. **
