I'm Not Your Manic Pixie Dream Girl Gretchen McNeil Books
There's just something about a girl who uses a math formula as the perfect gateway to becoming popular. That's right, Beatrice, aka Trixie, decides to climb the social ladder on the rungs of the pythagorean theorem (or something similar, you get the idea). The catch? She's doing it after her douche of a boyfriend makes a few too many comments about how he wishes they could sit with the cool kids.I am a big Gretchen McNeil fan so I was thrilled to hear she was stepping outside her horror/mystery arena and into the world of Kasie West, Stephanie Perkins, and Rainbow Rowell. Stepping is an understatement, though, because I'm Not Your Manic Pixie Dream Girl is a slide into home base after a perfect out of the park ball.
Everything you want in a realistic fiction is right here. Complex characters that you don't always like (don't lie, there are days you can't stand even your closest friends), doing things that make you want to shake them. But instead you watch them make the same mistakes you did as a teen so they can learn the same lessons you take for granted as an adult. You hope it's not too painful when the time comes for them and you completely empathize when they cry over the things they've done. Bea is not perfect, her family isn't perfect, and the teens around her aren't either. That's what makes this story so delicious.
In the end, I'm Not Your Manic Pixie Dream Girl will have you cheering for algebraic formulas and boys who can see through fake personalities.

I'm Not Your Manic Pixie Dream Girl Gretchen McNeil Books Reviews
Disclosure I received a review copy from Saichek Publicity in exchange for a honest review/Blog tour.
3 1/2 Stars.
I first heard about this book back in February. McNeil was a guest author at a book signing I was attending. And at this signing the authors all talked about their current/upcoming projects and it was there that McNeil talked about her upcoming book, I’m Not your Manic Pixie Dream Girl. McNeil is known for her Mystery/Horror novels and stated that this book is unlike anything she ever wrote before. I was intrigued, so when I was pitched this book to review I immediately and happily agreed!
This book was quite a surprise. I enjoyed it more than I expected considering I’m not a fan of the term/trope ‘Manic Pixie Dream Girl’ but there were definitely some up and downs that came with the territory. I liked the concept of the book, it may not be anything new…we’ve seen it done one way or another but McNeil put her own spin on it and made it her own. The writing was smooth and it flowed perfectly which kept me engaged the entire time. For a contemporary book, there sure was a lot of action which is always a must for me.
The initial stage of Bea’s formula experiment was fun and entertaining to watch. It kind of reminded me of Mean Girls, When Cady infiltrated Regina’s group. It was cool seeing her formula working immediately; skyrocketing her and her friends from nobodies to the most popular kids in school. But her experiment began to spiral out of control and she started to see the cause and effects of her actions. I’ll admit the Manic Pixie Dream Girl had me smiling and giggling at the beginning but after awhile it got a bit tiring and cringe worthy. Bea crossed a line that she shouldn’t have and lost track of why she did the experiment in the first place. However, everything didn’t completely go downhill. Bea eventually realized what she was doing, fixed her mistakes and the story ended on a good note.
All in all, I’m Not your Manic Pixie Dream Girl was a fun read. It wasn’t perfect by any means but it’s definitely worth a read and I really liked McNeil’s writing style. If you’re looking for a light, fun, and easy read, then give this book a try!
So delightful! What a funny book. Bea is a charming -- and very smart, intellectually, if not always on top of things emotionally -- heroine, and I loved the character of Gabe. This book is very feminist with a good lesson that still made me laugh and I would recommend it.
I cannot wait to read this ! ! !
I loved this book! My favorite book this year so far. I cared about the characters and their choices. I wanted more!
Unfortunately, I couldn't get into this one and I was so bummed because I adore the author and I was excited to purchase it. Seemed like a cross between DUFF and She's All That. My students will probably like it more than me.
I loved "I'm Not Your Manic Pixie Dream Girl." I couldn't put it down! I loved the concept, and I couldn't wait to see how it played out—definitely not the typical nerd-to-popular-teen makeover story! It was interesting to see what happened with Bea's formula, and how she reacted when things didn't go according to plan. I loved that the characters were all so real, diverse, and not stereotypical at all, especially Bea! She's flawed, which makes her more interesting. You can understand where she's coming from, even if you find yourself cringing at some of the things she does. Even though she's a total brainiac, she still has some emotional growing up to do, which is what makes her so relatable—she seems like a real teenager in that respect. And how cool that she's a math whiz!
I also love all the pop culture references. It had me laughing out loud! Gretchen McNeil's writing is fun and witty, and she keeps you in suspense! I had no idea how it would turn out. This is a real page turner!
I'm far from my teen years, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I wish it had been around when I was a teen! But I think readers of all ages can relate to the characters' struggles and find themselves rooting for Bea.
Definitely pick this book up! You won't be disappointed!
My only question when is it going to be made into a movie??
